The works on this project are progressing at a good pace and in the future it will have the capacity to receive the largest ships in the world.
In the north of Lima, work on the Chancay port terminal, located in the Huaral district, is progressing at a good pace. This megaproject will become one of the main gateways from Asia to Peru and a complement to the port of Callao in container cargo.
In addition, it will receive the largest ships in the world, those that have the capacity to transport 18,000 containers, highlighted the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC).
The Cosco Shipping company, in charge of the work, in coordination with the MTC, has been drilling the tunnel that connects the entrance complex with the port operational area. This has a drilling progress of 79 meters in rock in the operational area and 28 meters on the entry side.
The tunnel will be 1.8 kilometers long and will be part of a segregated and exclusive road corridor for cargo traffic related to port operations. It will have three vehicle lanes, two conveyor belts for solid bulk and liquid bulk pipelines. It is planned to complete the excavation in one year.
In the first stage it will have four moorings, but the final objective is to build 15.
Likewise, works are being carried out in the port area, such as the construction of the main breakwater. In the entrance complex, the necessary roads and infrastructure are prepared.
Potential
According to the MTC, it will be a port that will move cargo in containers, in bulk and on wheels and will have three main components: One is the port operational zone, where port activities will be carried out. Another is the entry complex and includes the vehicular port, entry gates, customs inspection area, administrative offices and logistics and support services areas. A third component is the tunnel.
The execution of the terminal will have an extensive port operating area with extensive cargo handling and storage capabilities. It includes docks, breakwaters, maritime entry channels, storage areas for bulk and rolling cargo containers, as well as maintenance areas and workshops.
Chancay will become a regional hub in order to redistribute cargo to other nearby countries such as Chile, Ecuador and Colombia. In addition, it will handle other types of cargo for the area of influence, thus decongesting the access roads to Callao, generating opportunities for cargo from the east and central mountains, and increasing its competitiveness compared to other markets.
Aim
The initial objective will be to move around 1.0 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) and 6 million general cargo per year, which can be expanded to 1.5 million TEU per year. This will generate growth in national foreign trade and will contribute to the revitalization of the national economy, highlighted the MTC.
The earthworks for the construction of the Chancay port are 30% complete and it is expected that the project will generate 1,500 direct jobs for the population.
The investment for this mega-project in its first stage amounts to 1,213 million dollars (without general sales tax), while in its final conception it will exceed 3,600 million dollars.
Leak
On the other hand, despite the oil spill that has reached the coast of the province of Huaral, the construction of the Chancay port terminal does not stop.
The Cosco Shipping company, in coordination with local authorities, has placed barriers to prevent the expansion of the fuel that has already invaded El Cascajo beach.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC), local authorities and the aforementioned company are committed to mitigating the effects of the fuel spill that occurred in La Pampilla in Chancay.
With the purpose of making the vehicle flow into and out of the complex more efficient, Cosco Shipping, in coordination with the MTC, included in its project the construction of two bridges to enter and exit this port terminal without obstructing highway traffic. Pan American Highway north.
To this end, drilling and placement of pillars and relocation of public service interferences have already begun. Likewise, an underground vehicular crossing for public use has been optimized, providing a comprehensive interconnection.
This mega private investment project, promoted by the MTC, will directly benefit the citizens of the town of Chancay.
