Great news! Eight regions of Peru broke export records

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Mathews, highlighted today that eight regions in the interior of Peru broke export records during 2023, describing this fact as valuable, taking into account the difficult year that passed.

The regions that achieved this great performance were Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Ica, Junín, La Libertad, Moquegua and Piura. Arequipa and Ica consolidated themselves as the main exporters in the interior of the country.

During the past year, 13 regions in total achieved positive results in their shipments to the world. Added to the aforementioned regions are Pasco, Huánuco, Madre de Dios, Puno and Tacna.

“In 2023, the value of export shipments from inland regions totaled US$54.23 billion, which represents 84% of total national shipments. Arequipa was the inland region that contributed the most to Peruvian exports, with close to 10% of the total, followed by Ica, with 9.6%; and Áncash, with 8%” commented the head of Mincetur.

According to the Monthly Regional Trade Report – December 2023 from Mincetur, Arequipa is the first region in mineral exports, while Ica leads the sales of non-mining – energy goods. Furthermore, in agricultural exports, La Libertad, Ica and Piura stood out.

RESULTS BY MACROREGIONS
According to information from Mincetur, in the south all regions increased their exports - with the exception of Cusco -, highlighting Moquegua (US$ 4,165 million) and Apurímac (US$ 3,495 million), thanks to the contributions of Quellaveco and Las Bambas, respectively. Sales in Arequipa, Tacna and Puno also grew.

In the east, Madre de Dios increased its exports (+11%) due to the contribution of gold, whose sales grew 28%. However, the export of Ucayali decreased (-35%) due to the lower sale of palm oil; Amazonas (-20%) due to lower coffee sales; Loreto (-11%) due to lower oil sales, and San Martín (-1%) due to the decrease in shipments of palm oil and coffee. As recalled, coffee shipments were affected by the lower international price.

Regarding the central regions, Pasco (+96%), Huánuco (+34%), Junín (+29%), Ayacucho (+19%) and Ica (+17%), increased their exports thanks to higher sales of minerals (copper, lead, zinc) and agricultural goods (grapes, cranberries and ginger).

For its part, in the north, exports were affected by weather changes. However, sales from Piura grew (+7%), due to higher sales of fuel oil, squid and phosphate, and La Libertad (+7%) due to higher sales of blueberries (+19%) and fishmeal (+50%). ). While sales abroad in Áncash, Lambayeque, Cajamarca and Tumbes fell.

AGROEXPORT GROWTH
Minister Mathews highlighted that, in December, agricultural exports grew 21.2%, accumulating a growth of 4.2% in 2023 and reaching a new record of US$ 10,134 million.
“There is no doubt that the inland regions sustain this important growth. Ica, Áncash and La Libertad have increased sales of fruits such as grapes, avocado and blueberries respectively. Agroexports from the mountains, on the other hand, increased 16% due to the increase in shipments of pomegranate, coffee and quinoa. Sales on the coast also increased by 9.1%, due to the performance of grapes, blueberries and avocados,” he concluded.

FACT
· In 2023, the value of Peruvian foreign trade managed in Customs in the interior regions, which represents 36% of the total, increased 2.8%. Three inland regions increased their foreign trade (according to customs entry and exit): Moquegua (+37.6%), Arequipa (+15.4%) and Ucayali (+770%).
